"Lakamari" is a type of sweet snack—a variety of Namkeen—cherished by the Newar people, an indigenous group native to the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal.
These treats come in various shapes and sizes, each with its own specific name.
Traditionally, they are presented by the groom’s family to the bride-to-be ahead of their wedding, and they remain an indispensable part of celebratory occasions.
The "Aati" variety of Lakamari is made by shaping a batter of urad dal (black gram) flour and rice flour into a spiral, deep-frying it, and then coating it in syrup.
Coated in a sugar glaze, the fried pastry has a hard, crunchy texture—offering a satisfying bite similar to karinto (Japanese fried dough snacks).
While wedding-style Lakamari can be quite large—often over ten centimeters across—this version is smaller and easier to enjoy as an everyday snack with tea; packaged in a box, it also makes a perfect souvenir for experiencing the flavors of Nepal.
