Holi - The Festival of Colors

Feb 24, 2023

Holi is one of the important Hindu festivals celebrated in India and Nepal. It is a colorful festival that marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring, celebrating the victory of good over evil. The tradition of celebrating Holi dates back to ancient times and has been passed down through generations.

There are various legends surrounding Holi, but one popular version is that it began as a celebration of the victory of Lord Vishnu and the faith in him over the evil Holika, who was destroyed by fire. This symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and serves as a reminder to be kind, compassionate, and generous towards others.

Holi is celebrated with great fervor all over India. People sing, dance, and throw colored powder (Gulaal) and water (via water balloons and water guns) at each other. Traditionally, people wear white clothes on Holi, which makes the colors stand out vividly as they are thrown. It is also customary for individuals to show respect for their elders by putting colored powder on the tops and soles of their elders' feet to receive their blessings.

Mithai, or sweets, are indispensable for Indian festivals. During Holi, families come together to enjoy a variety of traditional sweets. These include Gujiya, Rasgulla, Jalebi, Gulab Jamun, and other delightful treats. The whole family celebrates together, sharing sweets and reveling in the festive spirit.

Holi is not only a vibrant celebration but also carries a profound message. It symbolizes "equality," where people apply colored powder to each other's faces, transcending differences and uniting everyone as one, regardless of their original skin color.

In 2023, Holi will be celebrated on March 8th.
Heartfelt greetings from Ambika to all of you. Happy Holi!
