Pav Bhaji - Street food originating from Mumbai

Nov 21, 2022

Pav Bhaji is a popular street food in Mumbai, India's largest commercial city. Known all over India, this dish consists of a vegetable curry cooked in a rich butter and tomato sauce, served with bread (pav). Also referred to as Bombay Mix, Pav Bhaji is a spicy vegetable dish that takes its name from Mumbai's former name, Bombay.

Pav Bhaji is a popular Indian street food with various theories surrounding its origin. One theory suggests that it was initially a lunch menu item for textile workers in Mumbai. It gained popularity in the 1960s when it began to be served at restaurants near train stations. Today, Pav Bhaji is enjoyed not only throughout India but also internationally.

The term "Pav" refers to a bread roll, while "Bhaji" means stir-fried vegetables. The bhaji in Pav Bhaji is prepared with generous amounts of butter and tomatoes, along with a variety of spices such as cumin seeds, coriander powder, red chili powder, onions, and garlic, giving it a distinctive spicy flavor. Pav Bhaji can be served as a dinner appetizer or as a side dish.
